supervision of the city slaughterhouse, and who should be a member of the Sanitary Staff; and they suggest that the expenditure might be met by a small fee levied on all cattle imported.

I think that there can be no doubt that it is most desirable that these duties should be entrusted to a competent Veterinary Surgeon, and I also agree with the Sanitary Board that he should be a member of their staff. I go further. I think that the inspection of the Markets, which is an inspection of the food supply exposed to sale, should also be under the control of the Sanitary Board instead of the Registrar-General. The Inspector of Markets has been attached to the latter Department for many years, no doubt because the Sanitary Board did not exist until a few years ago.
