Society men

were arrested.

Some warrant were issued but the men

had crossed to Macao and elsewhere. We

could not

therefore

arrest them. When the warrants were stopped the people connected

with various houses and since then have increased in audacity and think

the Police cannot do

anything to them. They are all Triad Society men.

I do not know this of my own knowledge,

but it is well known by common repute.

I should estimate that there are 50 headmen and 20 to 30 thousand members.

By W. Wei Yuk - I know the Kong Ki Triad Society's Office, it is in Aquare Street.

It is frequented by rogues and vagabonds.

The headman is not resident but attends occasionally.

By Mr Mitchell-Innes - I consider that the Society interferes with witnesses and cases in Court.

By Chaloner Spurrall, portion - I think there is communication with prisoners in gaol.

Sometimes a convict will complain about an informer and suggest that he should be punished.

This goes to the Triad Society Agents.

Formerly, the guards resisted the conveying of intelligence to and from the prisoners.

By Chairman - Some brothels are under the influence of the Society; rowdies and gang occupy the rooms and won't pay and cause trouble.

Sometimes 10 men may be outside at once, and many more may be ready to assist; they squeeze the spinster and are a match for 10 constables.

If there is any attempt to resist them, they will raise a fight.

No one will admit that he is a member of the Society.

By W. Lockhart - People are sometimes captured from San Ui or Canton or Macao and ransom demanded for their return.

There is no proof but it is well known that they are seized by persons connected with the Triad Society.
