Some persons are

compelled to join the said Society, as when they become members none will trouble them. They have several houses or clubs; Taipingshan and West Point in which the Head members live to receive monthly payments made by people and keep the accounts, and enactings take place if there is...

Some painters who under necessity have to work in Docks have to pay monthly the respective sums of $5 and $5 Fuels ($2.50) to the Ting I Tong the Chief of the Triad Society at West Point. If not, then they will be brought into trouble - for when the painters have put one or two coats

of paint on the bottom of a ship in the Dock, some members will take the opportunity of proceeding then to scratch or scrape

off the paint so as to excuse the painters to lose money or pay a fine. All sampan and boat people

are also compelled to pay a certain sum

of money to the said Triad Society per month for protection.

If the money

is paid none would

interfere with them. If on the contrary (the money is not paid) they would trouble them by throwing stones, or by taking away by force sculls, oars, or anchors, whenever they see them. Although they have paid the money to the Society in this foolish way; yet they don't presume

to complain to the Police Station ""
