that the evidence was confidential. The Committee concurs in this view. However, that considerable weight should be attached to their statements; and that the number of members of this Society in the Colony cannot be estimated at less than 15,000.
F. It was stated by one of the witnesses, a Chinese Detective Officer, that "during the last five years nine murders have been committed, in which the culprits have not been convicted, as I believe, owing to the protection afforded by the Society to the offenders. I believe that the culprits were members of the Triad Society and that all clues were obscured.

6. Three other murders, in addition to those above referred to, have since been committed with impunity, and there seems to be no chance of ever discovering the murderers. In 1881, two Chinese blind beggars were stabbed close to the highroad and in open daylight, and one of them died of his wounds. The only object appears to have been robbery, the value of the plunder being naturally insignificant.
