Harbour Master during last year. I regret much that this report, which is dated 29th January, has only been published instant. The Government Printer seems to be wholly unable to perform the amount of work that is entrusted to him, and I am making enquiries whether it will not be possible to divide it with one of the Newspaper Presses. There is work which is by no means of a confidential nature which might be confided to a newspaper Press, without inconvenience.

It will be seen by this report that the tonnage which entered the Port in 1885 has been larger than in any previous year viz : 5,663,931 tons. The diagram attached to the Report shews that there has been a steady rise since 1879, with the exception only of the year 1884, when the hostilities between France and China led to temporary distress. Of the total tonnage 1,797,222 tons are accounted for
