received a document that has caused greater surprise
and in little else than this report of a
Committee of the Executive Council, not
from the inherent nature of the contents
so far as they affect myself, for
the adverse deductions have been met,
respectfully and rebutted, but because (a) it is the result
of a Committee of the Executive Council.
(b) Some of the conclusions and recommendations arrived at do not appear to be founded on any of the printed evidence;
(c) the extended nature of inquiry sprang upon me by surprise at the
conclusion of my evidence, which
consisted of answers to questions.
No question was put to me on
many of the points affecting the
management of the Force.
I was not aware of any
(e) There was a marked increase of crime; of course
fluctuations there must be, but there
was a decrease on the whole.
(f) The Committee make no
reference to the fact that so many prisoners
have been caused by the Police to be sent to Gaol,
that the want of accommodation
has become a serious question.
(g) The evidence I was given to understand
was that a series of questions were put
to subordinate members
confidentially.
(h) A series of questions to members
of the Police Force, concerning
the manner in which their Superior Officers
discharged their duties.
