Another unsightly shed, because situated near the Government Civil Hospital; in these sheds there is a great danger of fire. The objection was over-ruled. Shortly afterwards a fire occurred close to this place; but after the shed had been removed, the Government had to pay $8000 for a new retaining wall to the Hospital. I objected to these unsightly sheds being allowed in front of the brothels licensed by the Registrar General.
My objection to a second procession which there was a precedent in the Colony was over-ruled. A group of men violated the terms of their permit, and on a Constable holding up his hand to prevent them zigzagging over the footways, as well as over the main road, the mob set upon him and shouted "we have the Registrar General's permission; we don't care for the Police." If we had not turned out the Police in strength on this occasion, we should probably have had a riot.
