Mr. Hokai has introduced a teacher to me, whom he recommends very strongly. Mr. Yas, the teacher in question, is a native of Sôuchuan. Mandarin is therefore his mother tongue. He speaks Cantonese fairly well, and understands it thoroughly. He also professes a knowledge of official correspondence and the writing of proclamations and petitions. He is willing to accept the post of writer and teacher, and would be satisfied with $15 a month, with the prospect of an increase hereafter. As far as I am able to judge at present, he seems to
