also as a witness against Chang Chi. The case of Kwong Tiong is on the whole, I
submit, in favor of the accused.
The release of Cheung Yat was applied for by the Officer of Customs.
Despatch dated 8th February (34) which was written on the representation of Capt. Charles who
says
that he has discovered distinct evidence that
Chang Yoh with one of the piratical crafts was in Hongkong and the Viceroy states that he has traced by the help of informers to Hongkong. Whilst Chang Ych in his evidence in the
first case said he was arrested
because he refused to give evidence against Chang Chi. This, of course, is denied by U Sui Han.
Inspector Matheson
says
that he knows the junk; it looks like a junk, has traces of having carried salt, and as to the accused being traced by informers,
we have
it in evidence that he came daily to the
charge room; after Chang Chi had
been arrested, went into the Gaol.
The Viceroy
also mentions Chang
Sai Fang, You Pang Hang, Cheang Chang
Fun, A-man, Izai Tren, and Shaikan, as being the other pirates
and being in hiding in Hongkong. The
