I forward for Your Lordship's information the reports of the Police Magistrate and of the Acting Attorney General in extenso. I shall wait a few days before ordering the release of Cheong Ayo, in order to see whether any further charges are to be preferred against him.

I was glad to have the opportunity of explaining personally to Sir John Walsham, during his short stay here, the proceedings of this Government in the two rendition cases above referred to. We will be able to assure the Tsungli Yamén, on his arrival at Peking, that there is no desire on the part of the Hongkong Government to shelter criminals who have escaped from China.
