consider certain questions connected with the Police Force. The proceedings of this Committee were considered confidential, as it was understood that only on that understanding could some of the evidence be obtained.

I have now the honour to transmit, for Your Lordship's information, a copy of the report of this Committee.

Enclosure "dated so far back as the 8th March last. The last sheets of the evidence were only delivered by the printer on the 1st instant.

I have communicated confidentially to the Captain Superintendent of Police a copy of this report and of the evidence. It is only fair that he should have an opportunity of offering his observations on those parts of it in which the Committee state their opinion that his management of the Force has been defective. It is not likely that I shall receive his report for some time yet, and I think it better in the meantime not to keep back the report, which has been already detained.
