Mr. O'Conor to Earl Granville.--(Received June 16.)

(No. 179.)

Peking, April 20, 1885. My Lord,

IN the course of the prolonged negotiations which have resulted in the signature of a Preliminary Treaty of Peace in Paris on the 4th instant, certain commercial and industrial stipulations of a more or less objectionable nature to British interests were reported as having been claimed by France of China.

From one cause or another, the French Government appears to have renounced its intention, for the present at least, to carry along with the Definitive Treaty of Peace any important commercial stipulations, and, on learning this on reliable authority, I sent your Lordship the brief telegram which will be found in the telegraphic series of this day's

date.

I have, &c. (Signed) N. R. O'CONOR.
