SIR,
I am directed by the Field-Marshal Comanding-in-Chief to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 21st inst., and to acquaint you in reply, that before finally accepting a civil situation under the Colonial Office, Colonel A. H. A. Gordon, 1st Bt. York & Lancaster Regiment, should, after retirement, apply officially to the Secretary of State for War, for Treasury sanction to be obtained for him to receive his retired pay, notwithstanding appointment to a civil situation.
