Rey continued however to manufacture it themselves to try to undersell the China spirit, the real object by their negotiations with H.M.'s government, but encouraged by the legal agreement signed above mentioned Committee of their diplomatic action proceeded all over the country being of course simply to seize all foreign spirit which was of a character in Siam.
The case is by no means clear, the Siamese Government did not protect their monopoly. In support of their position they further represented that the spirit imported from China was more than deleterious to that made in Siam.
The Siamese Government did not however await the result of this matter in the Straits Agency to the Hong Kong servants. H.M.'s government made representations to the Siamese Government which have hitherto been disregarded, there is reason to arrest and maltreat the same persons found in possession.
Many of these persons were British subjects, generally from the Whampoa Settlements.
