Mr. de Bunsen has written to Mr. Tower asking for information as to date on which new agreements (treaties) are to come into force. The new duty will favour Java trade rather than that of Hongkong.

Mr. Reade: This does not throw much light upon the matter. Reply that Lord Derby requests that no date will be fixed before receiving the Reports by Mr. Newman & Sir F. Bowen which have been called for, referring to my letter of 27 Dec; Best Guessford (?) and 21/1.
