6. The text of the Convention would seem to show that the first telegrams concerning it, received both at London and at Hong Kong, were not strictly accurate. For those telegrams it was understood that China had agreed to throw open to foreign trade her three great South-Western Provinces of Kwangtung, Kwangsi, and Yunnan. The intelligence of the possibility of such a new and grand opening for the trade naturally caused much excitement and speculation in this enterprising mercantile Community; as may be gathered from the enclosed comments of the local Press.
