The story so far does not altogether agree with the witnesses.
Chat of the first witness.
There is nothing specially remarkable about the evidence of the other four witnesses. They all speak of a dispute about land being the cause of quarrel.
Further witnesses for prosecution: Young Chi, a village elder. This is the man who says the quarrel arose because the prisoners and their relatives had been forbidden to gamble and had, afterwards, been reported to the Mandarin and punished for it.
Yeung Jai says he was two hours getting assistance at the time of the attack.
It is odd that neither of these witnesses should have been called on the previous hearing.
