arise in respect of condemned buildings or works of repair affecting the outlay. It would be desirable that the candidate should be a young gentleman of even temper and affable manners; and as a heavy English correspondence with individuals, is conducted from day to day, which has to be perused by him for the Surveyor General's cognizance, it is desirable that the candidate should have a fair general education, and be able to write in good English style.
11. The present salary of the post is $1920 a year, (equivalent £400 a year) with an allowance of $30 a month for quarters, which in China it may be reduced to $1440 (equivalent to £300 a year) and so on its completion upon the commencement of a probationary term of one year of the Government. The present rate is to be confirmed to the satisfaction of the Surveyor General.
