On the 27th March 1875, we wrote to the Colonial Secretary of Hongkong calling its attention to the question of compensations, while large salary was granted to the Chaplain the Church of England for doing the same. On the 18th and 22nd March 1878, we wrote another letter to the Colonial Government of Hongkong calling its attention to it, and asking for a grant as it is given in England. In Index to the R. C. Chaplain attending the Carol: an Ben to believe this, a copy of our letter of the 27th March 1875 to the Colonial Secretary of Hongkong has been forwarded to the Secretary of State at the time. Having received no answer to it two years after, in 1880, we sent another letter to the Colonial Government of Hongkong.

623 other particulars to be forwarded to the Right Honorable Secretary of State for the Colonies. Lord Kimberley, Secretary of State at the time, in his despatch No. 23 of 16th July 1880, recognized the fact that we were entitled to equality and, considering concurrent endowments too expensive to the Colony, His Lordship proposed, as the present recipients die out, to discontinue all annual allowances whatever for Ecclesiastical purposes.
The intention of the Secretary of State having been communicated to us, we answered by letter of the 6th September 1880 that, although concurrent endowments could not have affected very much the flourishing finances of the Colony (it being a very small sum compared to the Revenue), while in West Africa at least 8% of the expenditure was expended in ecclesiastical grants.
