Chaplain to the Gaol and Civil Hospital; and for other reasons, a monthly allowance should be granted by the Government to enable the Mission to continue these services. In reply, the applicant was informed that a copy of his letter would be laid before the Secretary of State.

It was pointed out that the allowance requested, had, as he understood, been allowed, in virtue of a recent Parliamentary Act, to Roman Catholic Chaplains attending Gaols in the United Kingdom; while, in India and the Colonies, more liberal allowances were made to the Roman Catholic Clergy serving the Government than were made at home.

On the 10th May, 1880, a further communication on the same subject was received from the Rev. I. Borgazzi, urging that a grant, similar to that requested, be made.

A letter was received from Bishop Raimondi in which he submitted that the presence of Roman Catholic Missionaries
