reported

degradation

of

Prince Kung,

and of some of the Ministers

at Peking by the Empress

Dowager is not yet ascertained.

The

progress of events

will soon show the real

significance of this Chinese

coup d'état

the results of

which will doubtless be

known in England by

telegraph before this despatch

can reach

Your Lordship.

Perhaps, this is only one of

those

Palace intrigues of

women and eunuchs, which

occasionally occur both at

Peking and at Constantinople.

But the recent change may

also be

a trial

of strength between the war party and the Peace party

in

significance
