I entirely agree with Your Lordship as to the objections to any practice of that Kind. I may indeed mention that while I was Governor of New-Zealand (1868 to 1893), there was a local Statute in force there, empowering the Governor to affix his signature by Means of a stamp, but I never once took advantage of the legal authority, although in New-Zealand, as in the Australian Colonies, the Governor is weekly called upon to sign a great mass of Crown Grants and Crown Leases, and of other official documents.

My Lord,
Your Lordship's Most Obedient.
