2. Accordingly, I have

written to ask

Sir Harry Parkes to allow the latter

gentleman to

reside at the British

Legation on the same terms

as Mr. May; that is, under

regulations similar to those

prescribed by the Foreign

Office for the Student Interpreters.

I have, in pursuance

of your instructions, conveyed

to Sir Harry Parkes the

"expression of Your Lordship's

appreciation of the kind

manner in which he

has furthered my wishes.

I have much pleasure in transmitting

herewith copy of a

letter from Sir H. Parkes, showing that Mr May is making

satisfactory progress in his
