Nos. 6am almost in Sindly absorber by Hong Kong - The Commander of a Macao, a Portuguese Military Officer of distinction, with whom I maintain the most cordial relations, entertained Admiral Dowell and myself at dinner.

I was glad of the opportunity of discussing personally with him several intercolonial questions, and especially of assuring him of my desire to render him (in pursuance of Your Lordship's instructions) every assistance in my power with regard to the forthcoming trial of Diaz, – the Portuguese sailor accused of having caused the death of a Chinese at Canton.

I have the honor to be, My Lord, Your Lordship's most Obedient, Humble Servant.
