they shipped per each steamer, in former years, was 10,000 jars, and the total amount exported in each month was 100,000 jars. The spirit came from Kwong-chan and Chin-chan Prefectures, and were here transshipped to Bangkok. The Colony is unceasingly visited by steamers, and has a large collection of passage boats, traders and commodities. It is flourishing from day to day, and its population is gradually increasing. People have been induced to come to the Colony from other places, and it is looked upon as a happy land. To Petitioners' surprise, (the Government of) Bangkok has recently raised the dues on spirits imported, and has forbidden its conveyance into the interior under heavy penalties, the object being to cut off the importation of spirits. Considering the depressed state of trade, and the impossibility of making profit, Petitioners have not dared to export any spirit from the Colony to the said port in the face of the restrictions. There are many merchants, who have, on this account, stopped business. Petitioners learn upon enquiry that of late no steamer has carried more than two or three hundred jars each trip, which, when compared with the shipments in
