—march into the town (a distance of only four miles), without effective opposition from our small garrison, they could then occupy our arsenals and barracks; confiscate the large amount of specie in the Banks; and, seizing a few batteries, which are all open to the rear, turn the guns against the ships in the harbour.
8. On the other hand, I am advised on high military authority, that a Fort or Keep, in which even our scanty garrison could hold out for a considerable period against an overpowering force, could be created for about one hundred thousand pounds.
24. And I have already reported the conditions on which this Colony would probably be willing to raise this sum with the approval and assistance of the Imperial Government.
