merchants resident in this Colony, headed by Mr Wongshing, the Chinese Member of the Legislative Council, waited upon me a few days ago to pray that stringent measures of precaution continue to be taken for their protection against the Secret Societies and their disorderly classes of men from their country; and that the legal power of deportation, in extreme cases, of immigrants from China dangerous to the peace of this community, may be freely exercised. I addressed this deputation in encouraging terms. On the whole, Your Lordship may rest assured that, whatever be the result of the existing disturbances on the neighbouring mainland, the measures adopted by me, in full accord with the Military Authorities and with the Executive and Legislative Councils, will secure this Colony from all internal commotion of a serious nature.
