On the 6th instant,
The Chinese Admiral, Fong-Ju,
stopped for some hours at his way from Canton to the disturbed district, in command of a Corvette, a gun-boat and two transports filled with regular troops to act against the insurgents. The Admiral, accompanied by a numerous suite, paid his respects to me at the Government House, and remained to luncheon. I had much interesting conversation with him. Like all other Chinese Officials, he declared that his countrymen desire peace, but that they will defend themselves to the utmost of their power if war is forced upon them. He further stated that he hoped to be able to crush the insurrection, although he said that the Triad leaders had been joined by all the robbers and pirates of the neighbouring Provinces of China. The Triad Society is a powerful association banded together
