On the 22nd instant a fire broke out in a Kerosine store in this City: at first, the fire threatened to spread to a disastrous extent; but it was finally isolated, and ultimately got under and extinguished after a struggle of thirty hours, through the judicious measures adopted by Mr. Wodehouse, the Superintendent, and the efforts of the Officers and men of the Government and Volunteer Fire Brigades. Moreover, the English, French, and German Admirals, and the Captains of all the men-of-war in the harbour sent on shore strong detachments from their crews; while General Sargent supplied valuable aid from the Garrison. I was myself present for several hours at the scene of the Fire; and was much gratified by seeing English soldiers, and English, French, German, Russian, Italian, and Chinese seamen all working together zealously and harmoniously at the pumps and engines.
