The peculiar object of interest at Canton at the present time is, of course, the condition of the European (chiefly English) settlement at Shameen, which was attacked, (in the temporary absence of all foreign men-of-war), on the 10th September ultimo, by a fierce Chinese mob; when fourteen of the best houses were plundered and set on fire. A heavy indemnity has been demanded by the owners, through their respective Consuls, from the Chinese Government, but has not yet been paid. Indeed the Chinese Authorities have employed two English lawyers at Hongkong to assist them in disputing many of these claims.
