P.S. I may take this opportunity of mentioning that yesterday was the new year's day of the Chinese, which is the great annual festival at which much excitement is sometimes shown by the populace. But precautions were, of course, taken by the Police at Hong Kong, and everything passed off with perfect quiet and good order. Attended by my personal staff, I patrolled last night between 9 and 11 o'clock P.M., through the principal streets of the Chinese quarter of this City, which were brilliant with illuminations.
