8. Ta Whang ti "Great Emperor" is the title given by Sovereign, and it is insisted by the British Legation at Peking that it should continue to their use.
The Lucca, Forechy, as is well known, half-red note which would imply Equality, with the Emperor of China, to give to any Foreign Sovereigns any such.
"It is upon it by our Gracious Sovereign, "The Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and Empress of India,- the Ta-Whang-ti of the English race."
It is recorded in the Chinese Classics that the grand old philosopher, the Aristotle of China, Kung-The, (called by Europeans Confucius), once, when gazing upon a river, compared its pure and ceaseless current to the transmission of sound learning and morality through successive ages of mankind.
To let us hope that, under the blessing of Providence, Victoria College "may endure throughout the great future of China, a main source whence will flow the streams of education and Knowledge to generations yet unborn.
I am much pleased not only with the general proficiency, but also with the general appearance and behaviour of the students at the Central School; which reflect much credit on the Head Master and his assistants.
The minor Government Schools appear also to be in a satisfactory state.
