concerning the present condition of the Central School.

I had consulted with persons thoroughly conversant with Chinese feelings and habits of

thought as to the precise character of the address which would be most effective and practically useful. It

will be seen that in my speech on this occasion I referred, among other topics, to the teaching of Confucius, the Aristotle of China.
