"Mr Chadwick has pointed out in strong terms that the insanitary state of large portions of this City peculiarly "exposes it to visitations of "contagious and infectious diseases." The outbreak of an epidemic in this Colony could not but be regarded with the most serious apprehension, and it is therefore highly necessary to take every precaution to prevent such a contingency. With a view to remove the risk to which the public health is now exposed by the present method of disposing of the refuse of the Colony, it is proposed to adopt the plan common in England of calcining the refuse by means of a Patent Destructor; an account of which is given in the enclosure.
