It is obvious what the result would be if such men were called upon to act against a formidable Chinese mob, or against the armed bandits which frequently invade British territory.
There is an excellent spirit in the entire force, and I am informed that the English Constables have expressed great satisfaction at now being taught by Captain Dempster how to use their arms in case of need, for their own protection, and that of their countrymen in this Colony.
The Sikh element in the force is receiving instruction together with the English element; and is already acquiring proficiency. A few nights back, a Chinese house at Kowloon was attacked by an armed band of Chinese robbers; when the screams of the inmates brought to the spot a small patrol of Sikh policemen, who were instantly fired upon by the robbers. They returned the fire; when the whole band took to flight, leaving behind one of their number severely wounded.
