Some of the other large islands lying off the coast of China, as a material guarantee for the payment of military indemnity by the Chinese Government for the cession of Hong Kong; has excited much attention here. I have, in particular, been addressed unofficially on this subject by the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr. Bulkley Johnson). The general feeling of this community is fairly summed up in the annexed articles from the leading local journal; "Daily Press" January 8th 1891, which I transmit without comment.
