REG" 15 JAN 27,

In a letter I have just received from the Astronomer Royal I am informed the Court of Lordships is asked to offer a new appointment.

Your Lordships are to appoint and accept the Director and receive assurance. And I shall decide later what the Colonial Officer intends to send me, and act on it.

To the Earl of Derby.

From Dr. D. Gill. It would not do to have hands tied.

Received Jan 23

1. We do not know what Dr. Drach's present salary is; he is to have $2400.

2. This salary £250 on $1000 is what Mr. De Winton recommended in his report in 1883 (Page 3 lined down) & was offered by one.

3. There would be no objection to telegraphing this draft might be left back meanwhile, or one despatch which can never require alteration.

Yes. Shall it be altered if "when will observatory be ready for Director and instruments?"

Australia 147683 for selection of site. Telegraph stone had better not lean on this arrangement.

I have struck out that party.
