I have the honor to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter of the 16th March enclosing despatch concerning Observations at Hong Kong.
I am exceedingly glad that the
subject is receiving the attention that it deserves.
Mr Roberts concurs with me
in saying that the results obtained from observations taken at points so close together
as the various villages on the coast, will scarcely justify the expense of taking them.
It is almost certain that the tides at each will be entirely similar in character, differing only very slightly
in range and time
of the Governor of Hong Kong
could induce either the Chinese Customs Authorities, or the European community
in the Treaty Ports of China, to...
