which Sir George Bowen proposes to have made.

It is also important to remember that the Eucalyptus is very greedy of water. One of the objects of the planting in Hong Kong is being carried on in order to provide a more regular supply of rain-water. It has been found, however, in South Africa that Eucalyptus planting, instead of improving water-sources, has actually dried them up, and for this reason also Sir Joseph Hooker feels some little anxiety as to the result in the future of planting the ravines, if the trees successfully emerge from the period of delicate constitution in the young state, which is one of the besetting difficulties which attend their planting.

I am, Sir,

Your most obedient Servant,

W. T. Thiselton Dyer
