In continuation of my letter of 19th September 1883, reporting the steps I had taken with reference to the riots at Canton, I have the honor to forward for your information a copy of the correspondence which has since taken place.

As yet there has been no further disturbance there, and as Her Majesty's Ships are now beginning to return from the North, they will no doubt be able to afford full protection to the British Settlement, if it should be needed. It was the knowledge that there were only 10 marines on board the two gunboats that made me think it not unlikely
