Remonstrances addressed to them by M. Newman, no definite reply has been returned by the Siamese Govt. Meanwhile the property & persons seized have been detained, many of the latter being subjected to imprisonment in a criminal jail.
Besides the written communications addressed to the Siamese Govt by M. Newman, he has had personal interviews on the subject with the First King, & with H. M's Ministers, but has hitherto failed to obtain a satisfactory result, though a speedy settlement of the cases has been promised.
I have the honour to request that your Highness will have the good ness to call the serious attention of your Govt to these matters.

It is impossible that H. B. Sovt Should remain indifferent to the British Subjects representations & their servants who are put to heavy loss, suffering, & disquiet pending the examinations of their claims.
They have a right after the proof they have given of friendliness towards the Siamese Govt in agreeing to waive their Treaty Rights in regard to the Importation of Spirits, to expect that the Siamese Govt will, until the new regulations come into force, respect the rights of British Subjects under existing Treaties; that prompt enquiry shall be made into complaints of the infraction of such rights which are brought to their notice & in the last instance...
