This case is seriously complicated by the fact that these Chinese fugitives are converts to the Roman Catholic Church, and have consequently secured the zealous support of the Roman Catholic Bishop (Monsignor Raimondi), and of his Clergy, who employed a lawyer for their defence in the Police Court. As soon as the decision of the Police Magistrate was pronounced, Monsignor Raimondi waited on me, and presented the enclosed letter, protesting against the extradition of these men, and asserting their innocence. I caused a reply to be given, inviting the Bishop to substantiate his assertions.
