You being willing to accept the appointment,
you will be attached for a period of a month's probation to one of the two Convict Prisons, and for the purpose of studying the System & discipline which is in force in England: and at the expiration of that time to forward to this department a certificate (to be specified by the Chairman of the Director of Convict Prisons to whom the necessary communication will be made).
The appointment will not be completed until His E. Du Cane shall be able to certify that you have applied yourself with energy to the work and have made satisfactory progress, from the first instance authorised. During the period of training, you will receive half salary of your appointment.
Upon the completion of your term of training, should the report be satisfactory, you will be required to proceed to Hongkong in order to take up the duties of your appointment. Half pay will be allowed from the date of embarkation, full pay from the date of arrival in the Colony.
