that the defendant withdrew his plea of justification before the commencement of the trial,
and that the Chief Justice
in his charge to the jury
stated that, so far
as the evidence went, there was
nothing to affect the honour
of Mr. Price! I have thus
been spared the painful
necessity of considering this
matter in any way
affecting the status of a
respected and valuable
Public Officer.
The verdict
of the jury
was received here with
general surprise; indeed
with general dismay and
indignation; opposed as it
to the charge of the
Chief Justice, and
to the confident expectation of all
classes of the community.
