I shall refer to the case of the Portuguese sailer Diaz who was employed on one of the river steamers at Canton, and is alleged to have caused the death of a Chinaman by pushing him overboard on the day of the riot. This man was given into the custody of the Captain of a Portuguese gunboat, which was at the time stationed at Canton. He was subsequently conveyed to Macao, where he remains in confinement.
In the course of a recent visit paid by the Governor of Macao, he informed me that it was his intention to cause Dias to be tried at Macao according to the usual forms of Portuguese law.
