Telegraph lines in China, and requesting a report from the subject.
I have, to some extent, anticipated Your Lordship's wishes on this point in my despatch No. 206 of the 28th August ultimo, with which I forwarded a letter from M. Bullard, (The Superintendent at Hongkong of the Eastern Extension Company), stating that the Chinese Government Telegraph Administration have decided to purchase from the private company that created it (the Wa Hop Company), the Telegraph Line from Canton to Kowloon, and to connect that line with the lines of the Eastern Extension Company at Kowloon, the opposite peninsula of the mainland of China, which forms part of this Colony.
3. I added that should this arrangement be carried out, there would be no occasion for laying a submarine cable from Kowloon to Hongkong, as proposed by the Wa Hop Company.
