of the North of China, or of the mountains in the interior of Japan. Now it requires a voyage and journey of some ten days to reach from Hongkong either Peking

or the interior of Japan; so that if a nominal vacation of
six weeks only is
allowed, only three weeks can be
spent in the cooler temperature
necessary for the preservation of health and vigour - sometimes
of life. It will be remembered that there are in this part of
China no "hill-stations" like those
