Harry Parkes, The Hon. J.G. Growns CB (the Secretary of the British Legation,) and Sir Robert Hart, (the Inspector-General of the Chinese Maritime Customs,) - probably the three best authorities on the affairs of China, whether they knew any reason why My Lord's presence at the capital, on the invitation, and as the guest of Her Majesty's Minister, should be "liable to misconstruction". These gentlemen all declared that they were unable to conceive any such reason. On the contrary, they, - who from their local knowledge and experience are evidently the most competent judges of a question of this nature, believe that it is of great public advantage to the Queen's service, and British interests in this quarter of the globe, that the chief Representation of England - the Governor of Hongkong, and the English Minister at Peking should be on the most cordial terms, personally and officially; and, moreover, that the Chinese authorities should know that.
