Although there is no immediate apprehension of a rise in this locality, but from authentic information that their numbers are daily increasing, especially more so in Donghing and its dependencies, which I am afraid eventually will not prove beneficial to the Colony, I find that of late there has been good many bad characters, pickpockets and old offenders, such as earring snatchers have been admitted with this poverty. I am told that great anxiety has been felt by the members of this Society in the Colony hearing the news of the arrest of several leaders of the Triad Society by the Chinese mandarins in the market towns of Tik Tau, in the San On district, and Tai Ping District, and that they are now awaiting their trials. I should think if further arrests be made in this Colony and hand them over to the Chinese Authorities to be dealt with, it would have material effect and would no doubt come as an indication that the Chinese Government are determined to make every effort to put it down.
