In former years when this offence was very common, it was effectually stopped by flogging those who were convicted, and as the lobes of the ear were frequently torn by the act of violently snatching the rings from behind, the punishment did not appear too severe. The law, however, has since been changed and no offenders above the age of 16 can now be sentenced by a Magistrate to flogging.
2. By the Police, I have the honour to enclose for Your Lordship's information a curious illustration which has been hawked about this Colony and Canton, and which is intended to represent the recent riots at the latter place. The Chinese characters at the top of this illustration purport to be a copy of the official notification that was issued by the Authorities of Canton after the riots warning the people to attend quietly to their own occupation and not to congregate again for riotous purposes.
